What clothing and footwear should I bring for the Atacama explorations?
We provide travelers with some equipment for their Atacama Desert tours, including trekking poles, helmets, bottles of water and riding gaiters for the horseback rides. We recommend bringing along the following items of clothing, footwear and accessories:
- Baseball cap
- Buff or neck gaiter
- Layered clothing (1st layer: layer top and bottom, 2nd layer: fleece, 3rd layer: windbreaker jacket, 4th layer: down jacket)
- Liner or windstopper gloves
- Polar/wool/Windstopper hat
- Small backpack (25 liters)
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- T-shirts and long-sleeve T-shirts
- Thin fleece
- Trekking boots
- Trekking pants and trekking shorts
- Trekking socks (long)
- Water bottle
Optional items you may choose to bring include a bathing suit, sandals and a Camel Back.
What cultural experiences can I expect during the explorations?
The Andean culture is rooted deeply in the Atacama Desert. The local residents value their connection to the Earth. With Explora, you can immerse yourself in the nature of the Atacama Desert. What languages are spoken by the guides and locals in the area?
The most commonly spoken language in the region is Spanish, and our guides speak both Spanish and English.
What safety measures are in place for visitor well-being in the desert?
We have established safety measures in place to protect our visitors from unstable weather conditions during our Atacama Desert excursions. Depending on the conditions, some explorations may be subject to changes or even cancelled. This is most common during the period between mid-December and the beginning of March due to the rain and snow experienced in the higher areas. This is known as the Altiplano Winter.
