EXPLORA

Our Conservation Reserves

Inspired by a special care and understanding of the remote regions of South America, Explora strengthens its commitment to our natural and human heritage through the Conservation Reserves initiative.

Our team has been developing a new model that will allow us to expand conservation through our reserves over time, aiming to generate a positive impact on one million hectares over the next 10 years.

For centuries, Patagonia has inspired explorers as the only continental territory in the world south of the 51st parallel. Its ancient landscapes of ice and rocks, its vibrant rivers, native forests, and wildlife-rich steppes make the long journey worthwhile.

Since philanthropy often fades over time, we have begun a project that allows us to expand and accelerate conservation in the region and project it in perpetuity. We promote our vocation to open new trails through our conservation reserves, as we believe that only sustainable conservation will make it possible for future generations to continue exploring. Inspired by the same drive that allowed us to discover remote places in South America, today we bring inventive business and nonprofit initiatives together in a business model that allows us to continue our conservation work in perpetuity.

Thirty years ago, we began in Patagonia, a history of deep exploration that led us to be recognized as the World Leading Expedition Company 2019, after being first of South America’s for almost a decade. Through our conservation reserves, we push forward our drive for opening new routes, as we believe that only sustainable conservation will make exploration possible for future generations. Inspired by the same impulse that discovered the remote places of South America, we bring together entrepreneurial inventive with non-profit commitment into a business model that enables to conserve into perpetuity.

The urgent need for sustainability encouraged us to deepen our commitment to the territory and the people who belong and visit it. Our Conservation Reserves contribute to sustain Patagonia’s gaucho tradition and support today’s Kawesqar culture, while our School of Guides provides comprehensive and constant training to help others to explore, know, engage with and care about this region.

Our Patagonia Conservation Reserves rest in one of the world’s most remote, unpopulated territories, with an average population density of less than two people per square kilometer. Known for centuries as Finis Terrae or “The Uttermost Part of the Earth,” it is a region where wilderness removes the artificial and people can experience nature in its pure, original magnitude.

The outstanding geography, biodiversity, and traditions of Patagonia are a heritage for today and tomorrow’s generations. Our Conservation Reserves are committed to a future where people and nature can thrive by legally safeguarding our unique landscapes and ecosystems in partnership with local cultures and world-class science.

Our Reserves

Puritama Conservation Reserve

Running through the Puritama River Valley in a deep canyon of the Atacama desert, this Explora Conservation Reserve offers an oasis of abundant native flora and fauna, crystalline water, and gentile hot-springs. The reserve helps to sustain life across two broad ecoregions, where the Altiplano (Andean High Plateau) converges with the Atacama, the driest desert of the world.

Torres del Paine Conservation Reserve

Located on the north-eastern side of the Torres del Paine National Park, this Explora Conservation Reserve is a true expression of Patagonian richness, it contains different ecosystems such as Magellan forest, pre-Andean scrubs, steppes, and Patagonian pampas. Two rivers wind up across the estancias, along with wetlands, lagoons, and other water bodies. The land is home to Patagonia's gauchos, who keep practicing their old traditions in their everyday life and welcome the visitor with the natural hospitality of a region where freedom reigns and horizons are bound by distance and solitude.
